Lowcountry disaster relief

The South Carolina Lowcountry remains in critical need of repair teams to assist with damages from both the October 2015 Flooding and more recently Hurricane Matthew. Oftentimes those most affected are the poorest of the poor in urban fringes and rural areas off the beaten path.  Hundreds of homes remain in need of roof replacement, mold removal, drywall repair, as well as other important needs.  Won't you consider volunteering in the repair effort?

UMCSC Disaster Relief

To assist with repairs, the South Carolina United Methodist Church's Office of Disaster Relief hired a long-term construction manager to engage in the 2 to 3 year-long process of rebuilding homes in the Lowcountry.   Contractor John is housed at Aldersgate in North Charleston but works with house repair needs in the Charleston area, all the way up to I-95, and all the way down to Walterboro.

Volunteer Teams

Volunteer teams have come to the Charleston area from all over the country and have assisted in a variety of ways.  Here are a few items that may be helpful when planning your missions or volunteer team:
  • Size - Teams can be any size.  We've accomodated teams of 2 to 3 all the way up to 60 people.
  • Skill - Volunteers of all skill levels are needed.  Teams will be supervised by Mr. John Raimer, Construction Manager
  • Age - Volunteers of any age are welcome.  However, volunteers must be 14 years of age or older to enter the work site
  • Time - Most teams stay anywhere from 3 to 7 days, though visits of any length can be accomodated
  • Cost - Teams are responsible for covering travel and meal expenses.  Teams are invited to assist with the purchase of supplies and to make a love offering to the host church.
  • Schedule - Time on the work site will be coordinated with Mr. Raimer and tailored to suit your team's needs.
Our missions and volunteer teams often have particular objectives and goals when visiting.  Please feel free to share those service or educational goals with us and we'll do our best to accomodate your needs.
